Moving day checklist for senior living
Reduce stress before, during, and after move-in
1–2 weeks before move-in
- Confirm move-in date, arrival window, and paperwork requirements
- Review medication list and pharmacy plan with the community
- Label essentials clearly (clothing, toiletries, mobility aids)
- Pack comfort items first: favorite blanket, photos, familiar decor
Moving day
- Bring ID, insurance cards, physician contacts, and medication orders
- Set up the room before your loved one arrives when possible
- Keep visitors limited and calm to reduce overwhelm
- Introduce key staff by name and role
First 2 weeks after move-in
- Schedule regular check-ins with nursing/care leadership
- Track appetite, sleep, mood, and social engagement
- Adjust care plan details quickly if needed
- Give the transition time while staying closely involved
