How to talk with a parent about senior living
A practical script for a hard conversation
Most families avoid this talk until something urgent happens. Starting earlier, in shorter conversations, helps your parent feel included and respected.
Start with goals, not facilities
Open with what matters most: safety, independence, and quality of life. Instead of “You need assisted living,” try “What would make daily life feel easier and safer this year?”
Use observations, not accusations
- Say: “I noticed the stairs are getting harder.”
- Avoid: “You can't manage at home anymore.”
- Say: “Let's look at options together.”
Offer choices
People resist losing control, not support itself. Present 2–3 clear options: stay home with added support, tour assisted living, or start with an assessment and no commitment.
Keep the first step small
Your goal is momentum, not a final decision in one conversation. A 20-minute call or one tour is often enough to lower anxiety and build trust.
